About Author

  1. A prolific British children s author, who also wrote under the pen names Jean Estoril, Priscilla Hagon and Anne Pilgrim, Mabel Esther Allan is particularly known for her school and ballet stories.Born at Wallasey on the Wirral Peninsula, Allan knew from an early age that she wanted to be an author, and published her first short stories in the 1930s Her writing career was interrupted by World War II, during which time she served in the Women s Land Army and taught school in Liverpool, but the 1948 publication of The Glen Castle Mystery saw it begin to take off in earnest.

This is a nice cosy 1960s novel for younger readers I m not sure how much younger, I m guessing mid teens maybe It has romance both with people and landscape, and self discovery, and lots of lyrical descriptions of Wales I really enjoyed it, in part because Allan has a very optimistic belief in youth hostels and internationalism and hiking which I associate with the 1930s, and also just because the people were fairly pleasant and there is surprisingly little sexism I wish Allan s novels were ea [...]


  2. Catrin goes to Wales to see her mothers country because she saw a play that she found delightful Sh finds herself stuck taking care of her aunts jobdue to her aunts broken hip As a Londoner she is surprised how much she likes this tiny country town.
