I admit, I bought this book for the cover But this is not a set of poems about cats, alas Though still quite a worthwhile volume even though it lacks a feline presence There isn t much of a theme to the the book, though poems about queerness, death, and dreams appear throughout While I fully admit that some of the pieces went right over my head, quite a few were exceptionally poignant, such as John Kissack s Painting, a memory of his parents fighting as a youth I was most affected by Smith s wri [...]

Confession i ve read and enjoyed every book Michael V Smith has published from fiction to memoir to poetry with the exception of What You Can t Have which i don t have he s one of those writers who i feel is a kindred spirit i get what he s saying and i enjoy how he s saying it writers and artists who are kindreds make me feel less alone in the world these poems are smart, insightful, compassionate and expertly minimal i have many dog ears which mean many favourites a particular shout out to Wol [...]
