  1. The 50th Anniversary event begins This novel is the first book in a trilogy event to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek THE WOMAN OF MANY NAMES the Prime Directive exists to prevent us from rushing in and playing God where we don t belong.Number One is a mysterious Starfleet Officer who appeared in the celebrated non aired first pilot of Star Trek The Original Series, which later its footage was used as part of the TV episode The Menagerie Parts 1 2 Oh, by the way She was played by Maje [...]

  2. My standard for Trek tie in fiction is, can I hear the original actors voices delivering the dialogue Greg Cox always gets that right, and his plotting and prose are pretty good, too This is the first volume of a 50th anniversary franchise crossing story, and I really enjoyed it.

  3. A great start to this series celebrating Star Trek s 50th anniversary In Captain to Captain Greg Cox tells the story of the Enterprise NCC 1701 crew in two time periods, under Captains April and Kirk, linked by the character of Number One Each period features a suspenseful adventure full of intriguing aliens, diverse and compelling characters, fascinating technology and contemplation of issues like environmental devastation, xenophobia, and the meaning of the Prime Directive Looking forward to t [...]

  4. Solid start to what I hope will be a great trilogy I ve always liked have been interested in the No.1 character I m glad to see her character explored I ve always thought ST lit should do a series centered on Capt Pike s crew it s adventures The vast majority of this book is set in the time period in which Robert April was Capt of the Enterprise, focuses on the first away mission No.1led as a young Lt I think Greg Cox did a great job of setting the stage for this trilogy, not to mention the fact [...]

  5. The final chapters were intriguing but the bulk of the story was a bit dull Had to force my way through some parts The narrator for the audiobook did a great job though.

  6. I found this a somewhat enjoyable fling with parts of the Trek universe that you don t usually see and bringing back Number One after The Cage was pretty awesome, but I m not sure about naming her, since that may cause some issues I was concerned that this book flies against canon, but surprisingly it checks out The climax turned up a little late, didn t do much, and there wasn t much resolution at all, but this is the first book in a series, so to be expected.

  7. It s a good premise for Trekkies to develop a story about Number One But why is she so annoyingly stupid all the time With a few minutes left to save the entire Universe, she s bothering the only guy who can do it with irrelevant questions so that he has to tell her to shut up And this is after she got her whole landing party eliminated because of her incompetence Why didn t she beam up before getting captured She has time to run all around the compound and knock on doors and ask people to let h [...]

  8. Oh, yeah Now I remember why I stopped reading professionally published TOS fiction For every gem like Sarek or Doctor s Orders, we get a dozen like this forgettable beginning to a trilogy I will never finish I disliked the premise If the fate of her crewmates was weighing on her so heavily, why did Una wait 18 years to attempt a rescue I disliked the fact that three fourths of the book does not include any Enterprise regulars I disliked the name Una, which brought to mind Unseen University s Lib [...]

  9. loved this book It was good to see the character from the cage episode come back and I also liked the parts of the book that went back to when Robert April commanded the enterprise I liked finding out a bit about him and the twist which I won t reveal Greg Cox has done it again with this book and what better way to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Star Trek with the first book of the legacies trilogy looking forward to reading book 2

  10. Greg Cox penned an intriguing start to the Legacies Trilogy, which is Pocket Books 50th anniversary celebration of the Star Trek franchise As usual, he starts off with a strong concept, backing that up with spot on characterizations of the Enterprise crew and the use of an encyclopedic knowledge of the franchise as a whole to give further depth to the story As a bonus, we have an extensive flashback to the very first crew of the USS Enterprise under the command of Capt Robert April, where we wit [...]

  11. A great read that ties together a lot of threads in a believable way The Transfer key is very suggestive of the Tantalus field and that gives a wonderful new insight into the Mirror universe The story involves events from Robert April s stint as captain but this book is firmly focused on Kirk s time as captain Plenty of drama and a cliffhanger ending that begs you to read the next book in the series.

  12. This book is great example of what can happen over time to these sorts of mega franchises Somehow, someone probably lots of someones decided the best way for Pocket Books Star Trek line to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original television series a series whose enduring quality is based on focused, idea based, self contained, storytelling would be to launch a trilogy of linked novels starring a supporting character from the un aired original pilot as the main character, and sidelining Kir [...]

  13. A Book for the Mirror Mirror TOS Fans.As with most Star Trek books, there isn t great Depth here, but that isn t a bad thing if your look for a Popcorn read.A great if slow start to the consequences of the The Mirror Mirror Episode of Star Trek The Original Series. As long as you go into this understanding this is what I call a Popcorn Read, about the ride then the depth and challenge then you will enjoy this book A must for Fans of the Mirror Mirror Episode of ST TOS This is a Trilogy and the e [...]

  14. I m surprised there isn t going on in the nerdiverse over the 50th anniversary of Star Trek I only just heard of this book trilogy, which was released for the anniversary I mean, Paramount could have milked the hell out of it in their advertising for Star Trek Beyond, and they didn t even mention it in a single ad Anyway, the first book of this trilogy has a pretty interesting premise, it s generally well written, and it was entertaining I do wish that it had focused on Kirk and Spock, rather [...]

  15. A little unfocused, Captain to Captain nonetheless does a competent job of setting up the Legacies trilogy While the bulk of the story is not quite as attention grabbing as the first book in a trilogy should be, this novel does redeem itself with a cliffhanger ending that has me hooked Limited screen time for Kirk and company makes this a bit of an odd one for a 50th anniversary celebration of The Original Series, but I m sure they will get ample attention in the follow ups.Full review treklit 2 [...]

  16. It s been a while since I last read an original series book I was completely blown away at how good this book was Been a long time since I could not put a book down And the cliffhanger Enough said Looking forward to the next two in this trilogy

  17. This is the first Star Trek book I have read in a while, and it was wonderful I love the series, in all its incarnations, but I can t always get into the books Not the case with this one I was intrigued by it, firstly, because it featured Number One, a character I was always fascinated about The premise was incredibly inviting as well, a secret, passed down from Captain to Captain on the Enterprise, a secret Starfleet didn t even know about, and the cause for Number One s perilous mission I like [...]

  18. I ve been reading TOS tie in novels since the 80s I ve read ones I absolutely loved and couldn t say a critical word about them, and others that were so bad I didn t even finish them Captain to Captain is somewhere on the high side of the middle of the road I liked the premise of the story, and I was excited at the resurrection of Number One, since I always liked her in The Cage On the downside, I really didn t like the name Una I m not sure why, it just didn t suit the character, and that took [...]

  19. A Review of the AudiobookPublished by Simon and Schuster Audio in 2016Read by Robert PetkoffDuration 9 hours, 40 minutesUnabridgedThis book is part of a series marking the 50th anniversary of Star Trek Captain to Captain features Captain Una, better known as Number One in the original pilot episode of the Original Series The Cage and the regular cast of the Original Series.Captain Una, a legendary Starfleet officer, comes to the Enterprise on a surprise visit for vague reasons and promptly steal [...]

  20. Interesting book This is a story that involves a secret that dates back to the first captain of the Enterprise, Robert April, and stretches to the current captain, James Kirk However the primary focus is on Number One, the first officer in the original pilot episode Since this is a character who only appeared in two episodes of the original series this makes for a welcome change We are given far background on the character than we ever got on the series The focus of this novel is of Number One [...]

  21. What a great way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Trek, with a story that goes back to the very, very beginning of the Enterprise and tells us about Pike, April, and especially Number One The tiny references tossed in for the fans sent me to to watch episodes again as a companion to the book.Una, who we knew on the series as Captain Pike s XO, returns to Kirk s Enterprise as an ambassador, but she has a secret mission She wants to steal the Key, a secret alien device that she knew about fro [...]

  22. This was a great way to start a trilogy I absolutely enjoyed Number One s character in The Cage and when we saw her again in The Menagerie Pts 1 and 2 She s stubborn, intelligent, and creative I was excited to have her return in the book and learn a little bit about her character We still don t have a true name for her, but I m happy to settle for Una.I enjoyed learning about Robert April and his crew That section had a bit of an Enterprise Capt Archer feel.I liked how the Transfer key was sort [...]

  23. Quite an interesting kick off to the 50th anniversary novel special if you d call it that This story deals with characters that were seen in the original pilot the one that was never picked up , with Number One Majel Barrett s character coming to Kirk s enterprise to take a piece of tech that allow s for interdimentional travel Why In order to save her crew of course that were presumably stranded in another dimension this happened 18 years ago while the Enterprise was commanded by Robert April, [...]

  24. I don t normally read Star Trek books but there was some kind of special price for the 50th anniversary and I impulse bought it back in 2016 It was better than I expected I don t remember any books centering on Majel Barret s Number One back when I was a kid checking these out of the library every week The story was solid The characters are true to screen The author actually gives Chekov and Uhura something useful to do compared to a typical episode of the series They actually come across as com [...]

  25. It was okay I m not sure how much I liked the characterization of Captain Pike s former first officer, but I really enjoyed reading another novel featuring Captain Robert April Though this novel fell very short of reaching the heights of Diane Carey s novels Final Frontier and Best Destiny Another thing that bothered me a little was that some of the writing was a little tacky Things like characters thinking to themselves things like I m going where no Starfleet officer has gone before or I don t [...]
