  1. I think it is interesting that most of the GoodReads members who rated this book chose not to add a review It was tempting to follow suit.I am working through a group of three Moyes mysteries that I borrowed from a friend whose taste parallels mine If I didn t have these books sitting in a stack in my reading room, I am not sure I would bring one home from a library or bookstore Inspector Tibbett and his wife are interesting characters and the two Moyes books that I ve read so far are challengin [...]

  2. I cant read any of this book I got to page 129 and didn t care who did it The book dragged on without getting anywhere There s a house party, some spiritualism, an unpleasant old lady, another unpleasant old lady, 3 daughters, their spouses and a will Should be fun It isn t The unpleasant old lady falls dead. Then it drags on and on Expecting Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers and not even close Our Hero Inspector Henry Tibbet is boring His wife Emmy is boring I left without even caring who had don [...]

  3. Good enough that even on my second reading of the book, I nearly forgot the who and why and especially the how of the murder It is a seemingly impossible murder which happens directly in front of Chief Superintendent, Henry Tibbets of Scotland Yard, who was called in by the victim to prevent such an occurrence The suspects are the victim s three daughters, their husbands, a doctor and a companion Moyes has quite the field day with such a limited set of possible murders, but honestly, she had me [...]

  4. A Henry Tibbett mystery Henry is at New Scotland Yard and is often assisted by his wife, Emmy There were two interesting things about this book The first is how poorly it has aged it was written in 1970 and the second is the mystery upon which it was based The latter first Moyes was told of the near death of a woman who had become allergic to streptomycin, so allergic in fact that when she inhaled some that had been dusted on roses as a preservative, she nearly died It s an interesting way to th [...]

  5. Excellent mystery Tibbett and his wife, Emmy, are reluctant house guests at the birthday party of Crystal Balaclava She has requested his presence after receiving a message from beyond predicting her death Her daughters arrive with predetermined gifts for the celebration Then at the party Crystal dies suddenly after eating and drinking the same food as Tibbett and her daughters When the official verdict is natural causes, Tibbet refuses to accept it and takes a leave to solve what appears to be [...]

  6. Very clever and unusual plot, involving what appears to be a murder, witnessed by no less than Chief Superintendent Henry Tibbett, but the autopsy reveals no poison of any sort How could this be possible Crystal, Lady Balaclava, feared for her life, so she pulled a few strings to arrange for Henry and his wife Emmy to attend her birthday party This is the one day a year that her three daughters Primrose, Violet, and Daffodil visit their mother each bringing the same gift every year Is one of the [...]

  7. I picked up this book in Foul Play in Columbus last December As I was searching for my next read, I happened upon it, somehow thinking it was the next in the series I enjoyed the first quite a bit Now that I have read it and done some research, I realize that it was written much later in the series and nominated for an Edgar Award In any case, I still enjoyed it.Inpector Tibbett and his wife are great characters, intelligent and fun I also like the international and rather cosmopolitan settings [...]

  8. Although Lady Balaklava and her family are way too obnoxious for words, I really enjoyed this book As seems to be the case in all of Moyes books, she throws in a few jabs at mystery writers poisons unknown to science, rare allergies supposedly things that only happen in books I like that aspects of the plot are based on a real case It is hard to figure out all the details, but as reader you get to see a fuller picture than Henry or anyone else , so you are able to figure out many aspects This is [...]

  9. my ideas about moyes books have evolved I definitely like Emmy better than Henry now, just the way I find that the Nero Wolfe books depend on our responses to Archie than our responses to Nero.Anyway, this one has some really satisfying elements These books are classic puzzlers, and this one has good info about Dutch laws applying to marriage property, vs those of britain and switzerland.
